What is Hidden Jakarta?
Learn more about our community-based approach to ethical tourism and social impact.

Hidden Jakarta is a community-based initiative that welcomes visitors into Jakarta's kampungs. Our goal is not slum tourism, but genuine human connection: meeting as equals, learning about daily life, and giving back directly to the community.
We follow the principle of 3E: Emergency, Education, Empowerment. Every tour and donation contributes to meals, school support, and opportunities for families to build a sustainable future.
Our Mission
To create meaningful connections between visitors and local communities while ensuring that tourism benefits directly support the people who open their homes and share their stories.
3E Principles
- Emergency: Immediate support for families in crisis situations
- Education: School supplies, meals, and learning opportunities for children
- Empowerment: Micro-support for small businesses and sustainable development
Why Hidden Jakarta Exists
Why We Exist
Jakarta is one of Southeast Asia's most visited cities: yet millions live in kampung communities invisible to the outside world. We create genuine human connections between visitors and these communities, guided by people who live there.
Our Guides
Every Hidden Jakarta guide is from the kampung or has deep roots there. They are neighbours and community members sharing their home with genuinely curious visitors, not performers in a show.
Our Impact
Tour revenue funds food distribution, education and emergency aid through Future Kampung a Dutch foundation dedicated to Jakarta's kampungs.
